The percentage of high-school graduates enrolling in colleges and universities directly after high school continues to decline. National statistics dropped 69% in 2008 to 66% in 2013 and these numbers continue to fall. An additional decrease of 1.7% was reported in 2015.
As an alternative to matriculation at an institute of high learning, Wharton-Smith, Horus Construction Services and HZ Construction dedicate a clear initiative to supporting the continued education in the community. This is why we are delighted to announce the launch of “Education is Cool -Get One Construction Training Program” in association with the OCPS Facilities Department. One of our key components in our combined corporate culture aligns directly with Orange County Public Schools (OCPS) - an intense focus on student achievement! The objective of our program is simple: (1) recruit, (2) train, and (3) retain and employ individuals in the construction industry.
Ideal candidates are not limited to high school students. Our requirements are that the individual shows a sincere interest in a career in the field of construction, they are motivated, and they commit to completing the program.
The inaugural program will launch on May 4th, 2016. The curriculum will consist of twenty-eight sessions conducted over a three (3) month period and a graduation ceremony at the conclusion of the program.
All students will receive an Orange County Technical College certificate of completion. There will be no cost incurred by attendees. We do require all interested parties to go through a simple intake process. All completed application packets reviewed by a selection committee on Tuesday, April 26th and selected parties will be notified by April 29th. A mandatory orientation be will be required in order to start the program.
